Warning: Parents Will Fuck You Up
A while ago I watched Andy Rooney’s commentary on 60 Minutes. I forget what he spoke on but I remember he quoted Philip Larkin and I promptly googled him. I discovered this poem and kept it. I met a couple this weekend who went on and on about how they spoil their young daughter but don’t do the same with the boy. They buy the little girl anything she wants…expensive shoes and jewelry and cute pink dresses but they take the little boy to Wal-Mart and get him $3.00 shorts. I told them they were creating a monster. A spoiled little brat who will not want to WORK or STRUGGLE for the things she wants. Now Philip Larkin’s poem below rings all too true.
This Be The Verse
by Philip Larkin
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.
